Two mahjong tiles beside a golden flower

A few things before we play.

What is American mahjong?

A four-player tile game played with 152 tiles, including jokers, where you race to complete one of the hands on that year’s National Mah Jongg League card.

What do I need to get started?

Three friends, an American set with four racks, dice, and a current card for each player. Or try a beginner class, where the teacher usually brings the sets.

Can I learn on my own?

Yes. Start with our beginner guide, then try the Charleston trainer. A teacher or experienced group can help when you’re ready for a full game.

How many tiles are in an American mahjong set?

You play with 152. Sets often come with 160 or 166 to include extra flowers, jokers, or blank tiles. Check the breakdown rather than the total alone.

Can I play with two or three players?

Yes. Read our guides to playing with two or three.

Where do I get the yearly card?

From the National Mah Jongg League or an authorized reseller. Here’s when it comes out and where to buy it.
