About Mahj Atlas

Mahj Atlas helps new American mahjong players buy the right set, learn the game and find a table near them.

Who writes it

Mahj Atlas is written and edited by Jerry Chen. Every rule answer, set page and city listing is researched from primary sources: the National Mah Jongg League, its rulebook as cited by rules experts, makers' and sellers' own listings, and teachers' and venues' own websites. Sources are linked at the bottom of each page.

Before publishing, pages are checked a second time against those sources, and anything we cannot support is cut. We are not the League: when a rule is disputed or is only a house or tournament rule, we say so.

How we check things

  • Set specs come from the seller's or maker's own listing. We record the date we checked and link the source on every set page. We have not hands-on tested these sets, and we say so where it matters.
  • Prices are the listed price on the date shown. They change, sometimes daily.
  • Local listings are added only after we have read the teacher's or venue's own website. Each city page shows the date it was checked.
  • Rules follow standard National Mah Jongg League play. House rules vary, and we point that out.

Found something wrong or out of date? Email us and we will fix it.

What we do not do

We do not reproduce the annual card. Its hands belong to the National Mah Jongg League, and you should buy your own copy. We are not affiliated with the League or with any set maker.

How we make money

Some links to sets and accessories are affiliate links. If you buy through one, the store may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes what we list or how we rate a set: a set's readiness verdict comes only from its published tile counts. Local listings are free and are not paid placements.
