Common questions

What is a good gift for a mahjong beginner?

A beginner lesson or a complete starter set with racks, plus the current yearly card. Avoid designer tiles until they know they love the game.

What is a good mahjong gift under $50?

The yearly card, a card folio, replacement jokers, a sample tile pack, a quick-start guide or a deck of American mahjong playing cards.

What do you buy someone who already has a set?

Things that upgrade their table: a mat, a card folio, racks or a rack bag, or a travel set for trips.

Can I buy someone next year's card as a gift?

Yes. The National Mah Jongg League usually opens orders in January and ships from late March. A note promising the new card makes a nice holiday gift.

How do I know a set is American?

Check for at least 8 jokers and 8 flowers. A 144-tile set with no jokers is Chinese and will not work for American mahjong.
