Do you have to rack your tile before discarding?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: no, but it is best practice
No. The League calls racking first "best practice", but it is not a rule.
The detail
Racking (putting the picked tile on the sloping front of your rack) closes the calling window on the previous discard, which helps the game flow.
Whatever you do, do not put a picked tile on your card. The League has said that is not allowed.

These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
