How long do you have to call a discard?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: until the next player racks, discards or redeems
Until the next player (to the discarder's right) racks the tile she picked, discards, redeems a joker or declares Mah Jongg.
The detail
The League's rulebook, Mah Jongg Made Easy, says a tile cannot be called "after the player to the right of the discarder has drawn a tile from the wall and racked or discarded". Redeeming a joker or declaring Mah Jongg also closes the window.
If you call before that, the next player puts her picked tile back on the wall.
In practice: call promptly. Tournaments also treat touching the next tile from the wall as giving up your right to call the previous discard.
