Can you call a discard if your hand is concealed?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: only to win
Only for Mah Jongg. A hand marked C must stay hidden until you win, but it can be won on a discard.
The detail
"Concealed" means no exposures before Mah Jongg. You may not call a discard to put up a pung or kong.
If the discard completes your hand, you can call it and declare Mah Jongg. A concealed hand is shown all at once when you win.
Hands marked X allow exposures along the way.

These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
