Who gets the discard if two players call it?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: Mah Jongg first, then next in turn
A call for Mah Jongg beats a call for an exposure, even if the other player has started to expose. If two players both want it for an exposure, or both for Mah Jongg, the player next in turn after the discarder gets it.
The detail
For two Mah Jongg claims, the rulebook gives the next-in-turn player priority, except when the other caller has already exposed tiles for this call.
The League's 2020 newsletter confirmed that a Mah Jongg claim wins even when another player has already begun exposing tiles.
Who called first or loudest does not decide it.
