Can you put a tile back after picking it from the wall?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: no, once lifted
Not once you have lifted or moved it. Reaching for it, or even touching it, is fine, but a lifted tile is yours.
The detail
The one exception: if you picked out of turn or from the wrong part of the wall, and have not racked the tile yet, it goes back where it came from.
Separately, if someone calls the previous discard before you rack your tile, you put your picked tile back for the next player.
