What happens when the wall runs out?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: a draw
It is a wall game: a draw. Nobody has won, so nobody collects, and the next game starts with the dice moving to the right.
The detail
A wall game happens when there are no more tiles to pick and no one has declared Mah Jongg.
After any hand, including a wall game, the dice pass to the right (counterclockwise) and that player is East for the next game.
The rules do not change as the wall gets short. There is no official "hot wall" rule, though some tables and tournaments add one.
Sources
These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
