Is there a hot wall rule in American mahjong?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: no, it is a house rule
Not in the League's rules. You can call discards and throw any tile on the last wall just as at any other time.
The detail
Some groups use a "hot wall" rule that penalises throwing a winning tile near the end. That is a house rule.
Tournaments often penalise discarding the winning tile to a player with three exposures. That is a tournament rule, not a League rule.
If your group plays with either, agree on it before you start.
Sources
These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
