What does "pay for the table" mean in mahjong?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: one player pays 4×
It is a penalty where one player pays the winner four times the hand's value and nobody else pays.
The detail
Under League rules, as summarized by Tom Sloper: when a player misnames a discard and someone wanted the named tile to win; when a player playing out of turn or from the wrong end of the wall discards the winning tile; and when someone pushes out the wrong wall and a player then wins from it.
You may hear of "paying for the party" when throwing to a player with three exposures, or on the last wall. Those are tournament or house rules, not League rules.
Sources
These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
