What happens to a dead hand?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: stops playing, still pays
The player stops picking and discarding for the rest of the hand, and still pays the winner the full value of the winning hand.
The detail
A hand becomes dead when, for example, its exposures fit no hand on the card, the player has too many or too few tiles, picked out of turn or from the wrong end of the wall, or exposed a concealed hand.
Usually another player calls the hand dead. If you announce that your own hand is dead, it is dead too, though it is rarely wise.
