What if you call Mah Jongg by mistake?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: retract if your hand is not laid out
If you have only spoken, or have not exposed tiles from your rack, you can take it back with no penalty. If you laid out your hand, you are dead: the newly exposed tiles go back on your rack and your earlier exposures stay up.
The detail
If you said "Mah Jongg" on a discard and put up one exposure before realizing your mistake, you are not necessarily dead: change your claim to an ordinary call, and if the exposure fits a valid hand you keep playing.
If other players throw in or expose their hands because of a false Mah Jongg, the rulebook sets payments for the damage. For example, when a disqualified player's error makes another player throw in, the disqualified player pays players with intact hands. That is why nobody should expose their tiles until the winning hand is checked.
