What happens if someone misnames a discard?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: depends on what it was wanted for
If another player wanted the named tile for Mah Jongg, the game ends and the misnamer pays that player four times the hand. If it was wanted only for an exposure, there is no penalty.
The detail
Say a player discards a 1 bam but says "flower", and you need a flower to win. You declare Mah Jongg on the named tile, and the misnamer pays you four times the value of your hand. Nobody else pays. This applies even if the tile put down was a joker.
If the named tile was only wanted for an exposure, the misnamer just corrects the name, and the tile can then be called as normal.
If nobody notices until the next player has picked and racked, it is too late. Every player is meant to look at discards, not just listen.
