What is picking ahead, and is it allowed?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: no
Holding 14 tiles between turns, or taking your next tile before your turn. It is not allowed and is a reason to call a hand dead.
The detail
Under League rules you hold 13 tiles while others play and get your 14th tile on your own turn. Playing as if you always hold 14 and discard one is picking ahead, sometimes called playing with a "future tile".
The back of the League's card covers this in its rules.
Sources
These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
