Can you change your mind after calling a discard?
By Jerry Chen. Checked and updated November 1, 2026
Short answer: until you rack it or expose
Yes, until you put the called tile on your rack or expose tiles from your hand. After that you are committed.
The detail
You may touch or move the discard and then decide against it.
Once the taken tile is on top of your rack, or tiles from your hand are exposed, the play stands.
Changing your mind often is legal up to that point, but it slows the game, so be sure before you call.
Sources
These follow standard National Mah Jongg League rules. House rules vary; agree on them before you play.
